Simpson University Receives $5 Million Grant for Upward Bound Program
For Immediate Release
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University has been awarded $5.15 million in federal grant funding over the next five years to help boost higher education success rates among Northern California students.
The U.S. Department of Education approved four grant applications from Simpson University to administer Upward Bound programs at the following area high schools: Anderson, West Valley, Mount Shasta, and Dunsmuir. The programs will be funded 100 percent by federal monies.
Each grant is for $257,500 per year over a five-year period to serve 60 students annually at each school. The programs will start this fall.
The national Upward Bound program helps high school students from low-income families and families where neither parent has earned a college degree prepare for college entrance.
Simpson University will help provide student participants with academic instruction, tutoring, and advising; information on financial aid programs; assistance in completing financial aid applications; financial literacy; and support for applying for college. The grants provide students the opportunity to stay on the Simpson campus for two weeks each summer to gain the experience of college life.
Simpson University’s academic office, under the direction of the provost, Dr. Gayle Copeland, will oversee the curriculum and on-campus education of students involved in the program.
Simpson University was one of three Northern California higher education institutions awarded federal funding for Upward Bound, along with University of California, Davis, and Shasta College.
“Upward Bound is an important program for North State students in need of support and resources to increase their opportunities to obtain a college education,” said Dr. Robin Dummer, president of Simpson University. “Simpson University looks forward to working with area high schools in administering these programs that will impact hundreds of local students over the next five years.”
